Sick Leave in Romania

How long is sick leave in Romania?

Employees in Romania who are covered by the pension and social insurance system and have made the required contributions are entitled to sick leave of up to 183 days within one year. Additionally, there is a possibility of extending this sick leave by another 90 days.

How is sick leave payment calculated in Romania?

In Romania, sick leave payment is calculated based on the duration of the sick leave as certified by a medical certificate. For up to 7 days of sick leave, the payment is 55% of the calculation base. If the leave lasts between 8 to 14 days, the payment increases to 65% of the calculation base. For sick leave lasting 15 days or more, the payment is 75% of the calculation base.

The calculated compensation is applied to the entire episode of sickness, including both the initial and any subsequent certificates. If a continuation certificate follows the initial medical certificate and results in a higher applicable compensation percentage, the amount of compensation is recalculated to reflect the new percentage.
