How long is sick leave in Egypt?

In Egypt, the duration of sick leave is determined by the competent medical authority. The compensation for this period is dictated by the Social Insurance Law. The maximum duration of sick leave is 180 days. Employees have the right to request that their sick leave be converted to annual leave, provided their annual leave balance allows it.

How is sick leave payment calculated in Egypt?

In Egypt, supported employees who are medically certified as sick qualify for paid sick leave, calculated as follows:

  • For the first 90 days of sick leave, the payment is 75% of the supported employee’s social insurance wage.
  • After the initial 90 days, the payment rate increases to 85% of the supported employee’s social insurance wage.
  • The maximum period for sick leave is 180 days.
  • Supported employees with chronic diseases are entitled to receive 100% of their salary for an indefinite period.

What is the process for applying for sick leave in Egypt?

In Egypt, the process for applying for sick leave involves the following steps:

  • The supported employee who is sick and unable to attend work must report the illness by telephone and/or email before 9:30 a.m.
  • The notification should be directed to both the supported employee's manager and the applicable human resources representative.
