Employees in Malta who are in full-time employment, working a 40-hour week, are entitled to 200 hours of vacation leave per year, which equates to approximately 24 days. In addition to this, any public holidays that fall on weekends are also added to the annual leave entitlement.

  • Part-time employees’ leave entitlement is calculated on a pro-rata basis.
  • Employees are entitled to paid annual leave of at least four weeks.

How is paid time off (PTO) calculated in Malta?

In Malta, paid time off (PTO) for employees is calculated as follows:

  • Full-time employees who work a 40-hour week are entitled to 200 hours of vacation leave per year, which equals 24 days.
  • For employees working fewer than 40 hours per week, PTO is calculated on a pro-rata basis.
  • If an employee's duration of employment is less than 12 months in any calendar year, the leave is also calculated on a pro-rata basis.
  • Vacation leave can be taken in whole working days or the equivalent number of hours, unless otherwise agreed.
  • Employees may carry over 50% of their leave to the following year upon agreement.
  • If a public holiday falls on a weekend, an additional day off is granted. This ensures that employees retain their full entitlement to PTO.
