Parental, Maternity, and Paternity Leave in Sweden

How long is maternity leave in Sweden?

In Sweden, maternity leave is a total of 14 weeks: 7 weeks before the birth and 7 weeks after the birth. It is mandatory for 2 weeks of maternity leave to be taken either before or after the birth, assuming the mother is not on leave for any other reason such as sick leave.

How long is the paternity leave in Sweden?

According to the Swedish Parental Leave Act (“föräldraledighetslagen”), employees are entitled to full parental leave until their child is 18 months old, regardless of whether or not they receive parental benefits (“föräldrapenning”) from the National Insurance Office (“Försäkringskassan”). The father or other parent is entitled to 10 days of leave in connection with the birth, irrespective of whether the parent draws parental benefits.

What is the process for applying for parental leave in Sweden?

To apply for parental leave in Sweden, the supported employee should follow these steps:

  • Notify their manager and Pebl representative as soon as possible about their intention to take parental leave. This notification should include the start date and proposed duration of the leave.
  • Submit an application for parental leave at least 2 months before the intended start date, if possible, to allow Pebl adequate time to arrange for a temporary replacement.
  • Plan to return to work on the previously agreed-upon date. However, if the supported employee decides to return to work early and their leave has lasted for at least 1 month, Pebl may postpone their return for up to 1 month for practical reasons.
  • If the supported employee wishes to work reduced hours during the parental leave, this should be discussed with both their manager and Pebl representative to reach a mutually agreeable solution.
  • Initiate the reimbursement process with The Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Sw: Försäkringskassan) to receive compensation for the parental leave pay.
  • Record all parental leave days on our Global Work Platform™.

For additional assistance, the supported employee should notify the Pebl team of the absence via our Global Work Platform™ or by sending an email to support@hellopebl.com.
