Annual Leave in Austria

How long is annual leave in Austria?

The standard annual leave entitlement in Austria is 5 weeks per work year. For supported employees working a regular 5-day week, this equates to 25 days per year. After 25 years of seniority, the entitlement increases to 6 weeks (i.e., 30 days for a regular 5-day work week). The calculation of seniority includes certain external times, such as previous employment with other employers and periods of school education.

Annual leave must be granted in addition to public holidays.

How is annual leave accrued in Austria?

In Austria, annual leave is accrued as follows:

  • During the first 6 months of employment, vacation entitlements accrue on a prorated basis.
  • After the initial 6 months, employees can take their full vacation entitlement.
  • Starting from the second work year, employees are entitled to a full yearly accrual of vacation days.

What is the carry-over policy for annual leave in Austria?

In Austria, the carry-over policy for annual leave is as follows:

  • Vacation entitlements forfeit 2 years after the end of the vacation year in which they accrued. Therefore, supported employees can collect an entitlement for up to 3 years.
  • Supported employees are legally entitled to carry over these entitlements from past years to the next vacation year as long as they are not forfeited.
  • When taking vacation, supported employees always use the oldest not yet forfeited entitlement first. This ensures that accruals are not lost easily if vacation is taken regularly.
  • Employers are required to proactively manage vacation plans to avoid the forfeiture of vacation entitlements.
  • Any agreements that disadvantage the employee in this respect are void.

What is the process to request annual leave in Austria?

In Austria, the process for requesting annual leave for supported employees involves the following steps:

  • Submission: Supported employees must submit Paid Time Off (PTO) requests through our Global Work Platform™ for review by their supervisor. All requests are subject to approval based on team or department staffing needs.

  • Personal Holiday Entitlement: Employees may determine the commencement of one day of their vacation entitlement once per vacation year. This "personal holiday" must be notified in writing no later than 3 months in advance.

  • Coverage Arrangement: Before submitting a PTO request, the employee must arrange for another team member to cover their work. They must confirm with the team member and discuss the tasks needing coverage. The name of the covering person should be included in the "comments" field of the PTO request.

  • Advance Notice: PTO (except for illness or emergency) must be scheduled and approved in advance. Employees are required to give:

- A minimum of 3 business days' notice for requests of up to 2 days.

- A minimum of 2 weeks' notice for requests exceeding 2 days.

Velocity Global Austria appreciates as much advance notice as possible to accommodate reasonable PTO requests.
