Health Benefits in Spain

What are the statutory health insurance benefits in Spain?

In Spain, the statutory health insurance benefits are provided through the National Health System (Sistema Nacional de Salud, or SNS). This public healthcare system is primarily financed through public funds. Individuals insured under the SNS, along with their beneficiaries such as spouses, children, and immediate relatives, are entitled to healthcare services.

Coverage under the SNS includes the following services:

  • Medicine
  • Hospital care
  • Surgery
  • Emergency treatment

It is important to note that major dental treatment, long-term psychiatric treatment, cosmetic treatments, and medical evacuation are generally not covered by the SNS.

Employers are required to enroll supported employees in social security. Both employers and employees contribute to the social security system, which funds healthcare. The contribution rates may vary depending on the type of employment agreement and the job performed. Employees are responsible for enrolling other beneficiaries into the system.

For detailed information, please refer to Spain's Ministry of Health page on the SNS (https://www.sanidad.gob.es/organizacion/sns/home.htm).
