In Japan, employees are eligible for up to 5 days of childcare leave annually. This extends to 10 days if they have 2 or more children. This leave is applicable for children up to the third grade and can be taken to care for children who are injured or ill, due to school closures, or participating in school events. New employees become eligible for childcare leave immediately upon joining.

How is parental leave payment calculated in Japan?

In Japan, the calculation for parental leave payment (referred to as "childcare leave") involves several components:

  • Employers do not need to pay wages during childcare leave unless work rules require it.
  • Government-funded employment insurance provides compensation of 50% of the supported employee's wages during this leave.
  • Supported employees who return to work following the leave and stay with the company for 6 months receive an additional 17% of wages for the period of the leave.

This structure ensures that while employers may not be mandated to provide direct wage payments, there are government provisions to support employees during their childcare leave.
