In accordance with the National Insurance Act in Norway, employees who have been employed for at least 4 weeks before the sick leave begins are entitled to 52 weeks of paid sick leave.

How is sick leave payment calculated in Norway?

Per our Employee Handbook, to be eligible for sick pay in Norway, a supported employee must have commenced work for Velocity Global Norway at least 4 weeks prior to becoming sick. The calculation of sick leave payments is as follows:

  • For the first 16 calendar days of sickness absence, Pebl Norway pays the employee their regular salary. This amount is capped at 6 times the national insurance basic amount.
  • After the initial 16 calendar days, the employee may be eligible for sick pay from NAV (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration). NAV will determine a separate sickness benefit based on the employee’s income.

What is the process for applying for sick leave in Norway?

To apply for sick leave in Norway, supported employees must follow these steps:

Reporting the Illness:

  • The supported employee must report their illness by telephone and/or email before 9:30 a.m. to both their manager and the applicable Human Resources representative.

Self-Certified Sick Leave:

  • If the supported employee is incapacitated to work due to illness, they may deliver a self-certified sick leave form.
  • The right to deliver a self-certified sick leave form is contingent upon having been employed with Velocity Global Norway for at least 2 months.
  • Self-certification can be used for up to 3 calendar days within a period of 16 calendar days.
  • Self-certification for up to 3 calendar days cannot be used more than 4 times in the course of a 12-month period.
  • Weekends and holidays are included in the self-certification period if the supported employee is ill both before and after these days. This also applies to part-time employees with scheduled days off.

Medical Certification:

  • If the illness extends beyond the 3 self-certification days, the supported employee must contact a doctor and obtain a medical certificate.
  • Self-certified absences before a medically certified absence are counted as used self-certification days.
  • Medical certificates must be submitted to Velocity Global Norway electronically via www.nav.no or www.altinn.no, or on paper from the doctor.
  • The supported employee must ensure the delivery of the medical certificate to Velocity Global Norway within 14 days after the 3 consecutive self-certification days. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the withdrawal of the entitlement to sick pay for the entire period.
