Sick Leave in Pakistan

What are the eligibility rules for sick leave in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, the eligibility rules for sick leave vary between non-executive/workmen employees and executives:

  • Non-executive/workmen employees: These are individuals employed in any industrial or commercial establishment for skilled or unskilled manual or clerical work. If absent due to sickness, injury, or ill health, the employee must inform the company as soon as possible on the first working day of their absence and, if possible, provide an expected return date. For sick leave of 3 or more days, a certificate signed by a registered doctor is required along with actual evidence for the application for leave.

  • Executives: If an executive is absent due to sickness, injury, or ill health, they must inform the company as soon as possible on the first working day of their incapacity and, if practicable, provide an expected date of return. For absences exceeding 7 days, the executive must provide the company with one or more medical certificates from their doctor specifying the duration of absence.

How is sick leave payment calculated in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, supported employees' full salaries are paid for periods of sick leave as per the Employee Handbook.

What is the process for applying for sick leave in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, the process for applying for sick leave varies depending on whether an employee is an executive or non-executive.

  • Non-Executives: A supported employee seeking sick leave for 3 or more days is required to provide a certificate signed by a registered doctor. Without this certification, the leave will be considered personal leave.

  • Executives: If an executive is absent from work due to illness, injury, or other health issues, they must notify the company on the first working day of incapacity and, if possible, give an expected return date. For absences exceeding 7 days, the executive must submit one or more medical certificates from their doctor specifying the duration of their absence.
