How long is sick leave in Kenya?
Under the Kenyan Employment Act, employees are entitled to the following sick leave benefits:
- After 2 consecutive months of service, employees are entitled to 7 days of fully paid sick leave.
- Following this period, employees receive an additional 7 days of half-pay sick leave each year.
- A medical certificate from a qualified practitioner is required to confirm the inability to work.

- After 2 consecutive months of service, employees are entitled to 30 days of fully paid sick leave.
- After the initial 30 days, employees receive 15 days of half-pay sick leave within a 12-month period.
- A medical certificate from a competent medical authority is required, and sick leave cannot be accumulated.
How is sick leave payment calculated in Kenya?
In Kenya, sick leave payment is calculated based on the provision of a certificate of incapacity to work from a qualified medical doctor. This certification is necessary for the period an employee is unable to perform duties due to illness or an accident not caused by their own neglect or misconduct. When these conditions are met, the sick leave is compensated with full salary.
What is the process for applying for sick leave in Kenya?
To apply for sick leave in Kenya, the supported employee must notify their employer as soon as reasonably practicable of the absence and the reason for it.
