Annual leave in Bulgaria is a minimum of 20 days per year. For part-time work of 4 or more hours per day, the supported employee has the full basic leave entitlement. For work under 4 hours per day, the basic leave needs to be pro-rated.
How is annual leave accrued in Bulgaria?
In Bulgaria, the annual leave accrual works as follows:
- The minimum annual paid leave for employees who work five days a week is 20 working days.
- For employees who work six days a week, the minimum annual paid leave is 24 working days.
- Employees acquire the right to use paid annual leave after being in employment for 8 months.
- After this period, employees are entitled to use leave in proportion to their worked time during the calendar year.
- The leave is accrued over the calendar year.
- Employees have the right to use their accrued leave after submitting a written application and receiving approval from their employer.
- Employers are obliged to allow employees to take at least two consecutive weeks of annual leave each year.

- An unlimited number of days can be carried over if the supported employee couldn't use their annual leave due to pregnancy, maternity, adoption, childcare, temporary disability, or other statutory leave within the same year.
- The right to use carried-over leave expires 2 years after the end of the year to which the leave pertains. If annual leave is postponed due to another statutory leave, the right expires 2 years after the end of the year in which the reason for non-use ceases.
