The key state and compulsory benefits offered by employers in Slovakia include the following:
- Retirement benefits
- Death in service
- Long-term disability benefits
- Short-term sickness benefits
- Medical benefits
- Workers’ compensation insurance
- Maternity and paternity benefits
Additionally, Slovakia mandates unemployment insurance as part of its statutory benefits. Key details include:
- Eligibility: To qualify for unemployment benefits, an individual must have paid unemployment insurance contributions for at least 730 days within the last 3 years.
- Benefits Duration: Eligible individuals can receive financial support for a maximum of 6 months.
- Contributions: Unemployment insurance contributions are a mandatory part of the taxes paid by both the employee and the employer, based on the employee's salary.
Statutory meal benefits are also required to be provided by employers. They must contribute EUR 3.43 per working day to each supported employee's meal allowance. Employers have three legally recognized options to provide these meal benefits:
- Meal Vouchers (stravné lístky): These can be physical or electronic meal tickets that are accepted at restaurants and food stores.
- Financial Meal Allowance: As of March 2021, supported employees have the option to receive the meal allowance as a direct cash payment if the employer does not operate its own canteen.
- Company-Provided Meals: Employers may also offer meals by operating an in-house canteen or similar facility for their supported employees.
