What are the eligibility rules for sick leave in Nigeria?

To be eligible for sick leave in Nigeria, the following rules apply according to our Employee Handbook:

  • A supported employee must present a sickness slip or certificate issued by a medical doctor to the employer in order to receive remuneration for the period of absence due to sickness.
  • If a supported employee is absent from work for more than 3 consecutive calendar days due to sickness, a sickness slip or certificate issued by a medical doctor must be provided to cover the absence starting from the fourth day.
  • The sickness slip or certificate should be sent or handed to the human resources department or representative.

What is the process for applying for sick leave in Nigeria?

To apply for sick leave in Nigeria, a supported employee must follow the process outlined in our Employee Handbook:

  • The supported employee must report their illness by telephone and/or email.
  • The report should be made before 9:30 a.m.
  • The supported employee should notify both their Manager and the applicable Human Resources representative.
