Eligibility and Entitlement Duration:

  • 5 consecutive days for the death of a spouse, common-law partner, or 1st-degree relatives in the ascending line, such as parents, step-parents, step-fathers, and parents-in-law.
  • 2 consecutive days for the death of siblings, brothers-in-law, grandparents, great-grandparents, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Application Process:

  • The supported employee must inform the employer about the intention to take bereavement leave.
  • A certificate or proof of bereavement must be submitted to the employer as soon as it is obtained.

Pay Calculation:

  • Bereavement leave is paid for the duration of the entitlement.

There is no entitlement to bereavement leave for the death of relatives from the 3rd degree of the collateral line onwards, such as uncles, nephews, and cousins. However, employees may still attend the funeral and justify the absence with a document from the funeral service provider.
