How long is annual leave in El Salvador?

After one year of continuous work in El Salvador, workers have the right to a vacation period of 15 days. This vacation period is remunerated with the ordinary salary corresponding to the vacation period plus a 30% premium.

How is paid time off (PTO) calculated in El Salvador?

Paid time off (PTO) in El Salvador is calculated based on the employee's basic salary. There are two methods to determine this:

  • If the salary is stipulated per unit of time, the basic salary earned on the date when the employee must commence their vacation is used.
  • For any other form of salary stipulation, the basic salary is determined by dividing the ordinary salaries that the employee has earned during the six months prior to the vacation date by the number of working days included in that period.

Salvadoran labor law does not recognize unlimited paid time off (PTO).

Unlimited PTO is not an option under Salvadoran labor legislation. If offered to employees as an additional benefit, it must not limit any statutory rights. Once granted, it becomes an acquired right that cannot be revoked or reduced.

Is it necessary to track leave accrual on employee payslips in El Salvador?

In El Salvador, it is not required to track leave accrual on employee payslips. However, our Payroll system should display such accrual balances.
