In Bulgaria, there is a provision for a cash benefit for raising a child up to the age of 8 for up to 2 months. To qualify for this benefit, the following conditions must be met:
- The individual must be insured for sickness and maternity.
- They must have at least 12 months of insurance for sickness and maternity. This insurance period can be continuous or interrupted and does not need to be completed immediately before taking the leave to raise a child up to the age of 8, nor with the same employer.
- The relevant type of leave must be granted.
- They should not have previously used leave for raising a child from 6 months to 1 year, in the event of the mother's (or adoptive mother's) death or serious illness, for raising a child between 1 and 2 years of age, or for adopting a child up to 5 years old. If any such leave was taken for less than 2 months, the remaining period up to 2 months is still available.
The cash benefit is not available in certain circumstances, such as the death of the child, deprivation of parental rights, giving the child up for adoption, termination of the adoption, and placement of the child in an institution of full state maintenance.
Self-insured individuals who are insured for general illness and maternity are also entitled to this cash benefit, provided they meet the above conditions.
