What are the statutory health insurance benefits in Taiwan, Republic of China?

In Taiwan, Republic of China, employers are required to enroll employees in the National Health Insurance (NHI) system from the employee's start date. This statutory health insurance system provides coverage for various medical services. Employees have the option to enroll their dependents in the NHI upon request, under the following conditions:

  • The employee's spouse who is not employed.
  • Lineal blood ascendants who are not employed.
  • Descendants within the second degree of relationship who are minors and not employed, or adults who are incapable of making a living, including those who are students without employment.

Foreign nationals, including overseas Chinese, and citizens of Hong Kong, China, and Macau with Alien Resident Certificates (ARCs), are eligible to participate in the health insurance system after residing in Taiwan for a minimum of 6 months. This eligibility also extends to foreign spouses (including those from China, Macau, and Hong Kong) of ROC nationals.
