- Employees must notify their employer of an illness as soon as possible, but no later than the same day of the absence, except when circumstances are beyond their control.
- If an absence exceeds 2 working days, the employee may be required to provide a medical certificate.
- Employees may also need to provide updates regarding the length of the illness.
For caregiver's leave:
- Employees must have more than 5 accrued paid sick days.
- Employees must be able to retain a minimum of 5 accrued sick days for their own use after taking leave to care for and attend to the illness of qualified family members.
How is sick leave payment calculated in Puerto Rico?
Payment for sick leave in Puerto Rico is calculated based on the supported employee's hourly rate from the month the leave is accumulated. For supported employees who receive commissions or other sales incentives, the calculation involves dividing the total amount of incentives earned over the year by 52 weeks.
What is the process for applying for sick leave in Puerto Rico?
Supported employees in Puerto Rico can apply for sick leave in the following ways:
